Food for Health

The food we eat has a significant impact on our health, according to a large number of scientific studies. Changes in diet can help prevent or control many health problems and deseases, including obesity, diabetes and certain risk factors for cancer and heart disease.

Dietetics is the science of how food and nutrition affects human health. The field of dietetics has a strong emphasis on public health and a commitment to educating all about the importance of making proper dietary choices. Dietitian nutritionists use nutrition and food science to help people improve their health. Nutrition and dietetic technicians work with dietitian nutritionists to provide care and consultation to patients. Both dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetic technicians may also provide general nutrition education.

Who hasn't seen or heard Hippocrates' famous quote about letting food be your medicine and your medicine your food? And we all know that "We are what we eat". Every cell in our body was created from the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. In addition to nourishing our bodies, food also affects the quality of our lives, our appearance, moods, weight, energy, the aging process and our overall health and well-being.

Health and wellness are hot topics around the globe, and they have been for years. Despite the immense amount of attention devoted to the topic, however, the percentage of adults around the world who are considered overweight has increased by nearly 30% over the past 30 years. The statistic among children is even more striking: 47%.

Intolerances and Food Allergies
Intolerances and Food Allergies

Food intolerance, unlike true food allergy can have a number of different causes. Many different names are used to describe adverse reactions to foods, including food hypersensitivity, food intolerance, food allergy and many other medical and non-medical terms.

Food allergy is a reaction caused by the immune system’s reaction to a food, causing distressing and often severe symptoms. The immune system usually makes specific IgE antibodies to ‘fight off’ the allergens found in these foods. This results in the release of histamine and other naturally occurring chemicals in the body, which subsequently cause inflammation.

Food intolerance
reactions do not involve IgE antibodies or the immune system. The mechanisms for most types of food intolerance are unclear. Reactions are usually delayed, occurring several hours and sometimes up to several days after eating the offending food. The symptoms caused by these reactions are usually gut symptoms, such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and IBS, skin problems such as eczema and joint pain.

Obesity and Overweight
Obesity and Overweight

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults.

Millions of people worldwide are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for many health problems. The more body fat that you have and the more you weigh, the more likely you are to develop: Coronary heart disease High blood pressure Type 2 diabetes Gallstones Breathing problems Certain cancers

Child nutrition

A healthy diet helps children grow and learn. It also helps prevent obesity and weight-related diseases, such as diabetes.

You want your child to eat healthy foods, but do you know which nutrients are necessary and in what amounts?

Nutrition for kids is based on the same principles as nutrition for adults. Everyone needs the same types of nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. Children, however, need different amounts of specific nutrients at different ages.

Eating right extends life, but knowing what's 'right' is key

Caring for Seniors and Their Nutritional Needs

When you were a child, the adults in your life likely made sure that you got enough to eat. Now that you’re an adult, caretaking roles may have switched. Do you know if your elderly loved ones are getting their nutritional needs met? Elderly people may have trouble preparing their own meals, or even forget to eat altogether. It’s important to recognize the signs that older family members may not be eating enough, and understand what you can do to help.

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. The four most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED). Eating disorders currently affect more women, only approximately 25% are male. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate among all psychological disorders.
